Close to the Welsh border, the medieval market town of Shrewsbury is home to over 600 listed buildings and the famous Shrewsbury Abbey. Stroll along the River Severn, which winds through the town centre, or enjoy an afternoon of shopping and an evening meal at one of the many restaurants. Look out for major festivals throughout the year, including the Shrewsbury Flower Show and the Shrewsbury Folk Festival, one of the UK’s top folk events. Each year also sees the Darwin Festival, in celebration of Charles Darwin who was born and educated in the town.
The Shrewsbury Hills are an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and wonderful for long or short walks. The pretty market town of Oswestry, on the English side of the border with Wales, is only half an hour away.
